Episode 96, September 2013: Wild Wise & Musician Fawn Fritzen

The Yukon has a large bear population compared to most places down south. As towns increase in size, so do the number of interactions between humans and bears. In 2012, 17 bears were relocated, 16 bears had to be shot by conservation officers because they posed a safety risk, and five additional bears were killed by private citizens in defense of life and/or property.

One group, called Wild Wise, is on a mission to prevent deadly bear and human interactions. I speak with Nicole Tattam to find out more about their pilot project and what it means for the bear population in the Whitehorse area.
