Episode 44: Knik 200 Joe Redington Sr. Memorial Sled Dog Race

The Knik 200 Joe Redington Sr. Memorial Sled Dog Race takes place in Alaska. This year’s race begins January 7. Among others, 4-time Iditarod Champion Martin Buser will be competing, along with many other big names.

The Knik 200 is what they call a mid-distance race, and it’s weathered some hard times. We’ll find out how this Little Race That could is still going, and what it takes to run an Alaskan sled dog race. One of our special guests on this episode of My Yukon Life podcast radio includes one of the most popular women sled dog mushers in the world– DeeDee Jonrowe. DeeDee is once again competing in the Knik 200 and she’ll share with us what makes the race so special to her, and what her racing strategy will be.

Episode 10: Faro, Yukon’s Sheep & Crane Viewing Festival

Host Jennifer Hawks takes My Yukon Life listeners on location to Faro, Yukon for the annual Sheep and Crane Viewing Festival. Jennifer captures the highlights of the three day event, which includes local bluegrass music, a wild game BBQ, and fireside presentations.

Faro is home to 400 citizens, a town that was named after the card game. When the Faro mine was operating at its peak, the population was just under 2,000. When ore prices dropped in 1985, Faro’s population dipped to 97. The mine is now closed and Faro’s economy is primarily dependent on tourism.
